Introduction

The purpose of  The Geraniaceae Group is to promote knowledge of the species of Geraniaceae. Our functions include annual meetings, a specialist book list, the seed exchange and a large slide library.

This Group was formed in 1981 by Richard Soar, Diana Griffiths, and Richard Clifton.

We aim to bring together as many people as possible who are interested in the species ( and primary, or inter-species hybrids) of all the Geraniaceae, especially core genera Erodium, Geranium, Pelargonium and Monsonia & Sarcocaulon; to encourage interest in growing plants, and also to encourage the exchange of information between members.

Our aims

• To meet with other cultivators of the species - as opportunity permits, we visit various noted collections and support the NCCPG Collection Holders' "Open Days"; we also meet members at the Conferences organised by various Societies around the world, and welcome reports of any such events for the Newsletter

• To exchange information between members - To allow direct correspondence we list members' names, addresses and e-mails with members' permission

• To provide a forum for exchange of information - we produce a Group Newsletter four times a year to which members are requested to contribute, and the Group Slide Library, run by A.S. Edwards, of over 500 slides, provides pictorial material

• To improve members' access to species and to re-introduce into cultivation species no longer grown or species new to science - we run a large and very active Seed Exchange Scheme

• To encourage the use of botanically correct names - both as to spelling and as to re-identification of plants in cultivation, using source data as available from the  Group Bookshop

• To recreate primary hybrids of Pelargonium species as illustrated in Sweet's "Geraniaceae" - we have published several accounts and colour illustrations from members who have achieved this aim

• To produce and exhibit non-competitive displays

• To promote the preservation of habitats in all countries where the species grow wild through articles in the News, through discouraging the removal of live plants from the wild, and ensuring wild-collecting is less necessary by not losing what has been collected

The Group Newsletter

The Group newsletter, which all members receive four times in their subscription year, is the main means by which members exchange and receive information. All members are encouraged to participate, with articles, photos, or just short notes either to the Group newsletter or to this website. Photos are preferred for the News but generally cannot be returned; slides can be returned if not for donation to the Slide Library. Observations on cultivation, propagation, notes on habitats, climate, soils, pests, reports of meetings, conventions, and research relating to the Geraniaceae that would be of interest to the members, all are very much wanted for  the News or, if technical, our Associates Notes. We very much rely on the members to keep the newsletter full and interesting!
